Reviewing the 2017 “Do-It-Yourself” Site Builder Super Bowl Commercials

GoDaddy Superbowl Internet 2017

For most people the Super Bowl is less about the game itself and more about the spectacle surrounding it. The game itself this year was probably one of the greatest games in the history of the Super Bowl and certainly the greatest comeback ever. The New England Patriots came back from a 25 point deficit to beat the Atlanta Falcons 34-28 in overtime.

In between all the actual game excitement and Lady Gaga halftime show, audiences were treated to what tend to be some of the most ridiculous, funny and heart-warming commercials of the year. Rather than sit here and review some of my favourite commercials of the night I thought it would make way more sense if I reviewed one type of commercial – the “Do-It-Yourself” site builder commercials.

How I feel about “Do-It-Yourself” site builders is another topic for another time (I dislike them) but for today, let’s take a look at the pros and cons of the Super Bowl commercials from GoDaddy, Wix and SquareSpace.

GoDaddy – The Internet Wants You

Pros:
– Turning the internet into a person reminded me of when Dave Chappelle turned the internet into an actual place
– Cats on Roomba’s
– Having the person who’s personifying the internet listen to Rick Astley’s – Never Gonna Give You Up which plays on “Rickrolling
– All the other internet “Easter eggs” from the “What color is this dress?” to the “water bottle flip”

Cons:
– None, this commercial was pretty great.

Final Rating:
5/5

SquareSpace – Calling JohnMalkovich.com

Pros:
– John Malkovich is always a win
– The comedic aspect of him not being able to purchase his own domain “JohnMalkovich.com” because another random John Malkovich had it
– The “Get out of my name!!!” line

Cons:
– SquareSpace is more about site building than it is about domain sales so I would have liked to see them incorporate their site building a bit more.

Final Rating:
4/5

Wix

Pros:
– Starting with a business owner showing the simplicity of their website builder
– Gal Gadot and Jason Statham cameo
– The website design they showed was really clean and well-done

Cons:
– A bit too over-the-top with the business owner being completely oblivious to Gal Gadot and Jason Statham tearing up his entire restaurant because he’s working on his website with headphones on.

Final Rating:
4/5
